Goodbye Summer, Winter May Be Back By Wednesday

Severe_Weather_watchAfter a very warm Easter weekend, two storms are expected to hit Southern California this week, bringing rain, winds and possibly snow in the mountains.

The National Weather Service is reporting that the first storm will bring rain to the Central Coast and move into the Los Angeles area Tuesday night.

A cold and unstable air mass will continue to bring a threat of showers to the region on Wednesday. Preliminary rainfall estimates are one-third to three-quarters of an inch for coastal and valley areas. South and southwestern-facing areas should expect three-quarters of an inch to an inch and one-half of rain.

Snow levels are expected to range between 5,500 and 6,000 feet on Tuesday night, falling to between 5,000 and 4,500 feet on Wednesday. Elevations above 6,000 feet could see between six to 12 inches of new snow, with lighter accumulations at lower elevations.

This storm will also bring gusty southwest winds to the mountains and deserts with gusts up to 50 MPH.

A second storm is expected later in the week, possibly Thursday night into Friday with a chance of showers extending into Saturday. Snow levels for that storm are anticipated to be between 4,000 and 5,000 feet.

The combination of snow and gusty winds in the local mountains could bring reduced visibilities due to blowing snow at times this week. Motorists planning to travel into the local mountains should monitor the latest National Weather Service forecasts and statements as well as check the latest road conditions, as additional, updated storm watches or advisories may be posted for each of these late season storms.
