Gridley Man Dies In Freeway Blaze

CHP investigating fatal solo vehicle crash on northbound I-5.

A 38-year-old man died Sunday morning on the Golden State Freeway near Pyramid Lake.
The incident was reported to the CHP at 4:03 a.m., according to Officer Jose Nunez. He said that the L.A. County Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the northbound lanes just north of Smokey Bear Road and, upon extinguishing the blaze, found the remains of a male driver in the car.
“When the CHP arrived, they found evidence of an early traffic collision,” Nunez said. “It was unclear if the driver expired from the fire or from injuries suffered in the collision.”
The victim is reported to be a resident of Gridley and was driving a 1994 Acura Integra. The coroner has not released his identity, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident is under investigation.
