As relief continues to flow into the devastated island of Haiti, good news has begun to flow out.
More than 25 children, whose orphanage was run by Three Angels Children’s Relief and was destroyed by the quake, have been moved to adoptive parents on U.S soil.
“These orphans are children who have the paperwork and everything done, and were waiting for the government to give them the OK,” said Brendie Heter, spokesperson the orphanage.
Allocating an aircraft to move the children to Florida where their new parents were waiting was difficult, but Missionary Aviation Ministry, a group that regularly flies to the island transported the children.
With the 26 orphans moved out of the country, Three Angels Children’s Relief shifted its focus to its school in Port au Prince, which serves more then 345 children.
Three Angels Christian Academy was destroyed when the massive quake struck the island nation on January 12.
“We know that we lost some teachers, and children [in the quake],” said Heter. “Our focus was on the orphans first, but now our focus is on the kids and the school.”
Three Angels Children’s Relief has three representatives from the states on the ground in Haiti, but they are working with more than 50 Haitians who are employees of the school or friends of the organization to help the children.
Another way the organization is helping the children as well as the people of Haiti is by collecting donations.
“We need monetary support more than anything,” said Heter. “For every dollar that is donated we can spend $7 in the field.”
This is because the cost of shipping goods to Haiti is expensive, and with the help of other larger organizations, supplies can be purchased on the island in bulk.
One thing that Heter says is crucial to Three Angels Children’s Relief efforts is satellite phones. These phones will allow for better communication and also give a better picture of what is needed on a daily basis.
According to Heter the phones are extremely expensive to rent in Haiti and are the only way to communicate off the island.
