Hart Board Puts Bond Measure On November Ballot

District hopes for $300 million to finance Castaic High, performing arts centers at Canyon, Saugus.

The William S. Hart High School District is hoping for your “yes” vote on November 8, as the district’s Governing Board approved placing a General Obligation Bond before the voters.

The Proposition 39 bond, which would provide $300 million for construction and modernization, must be approved by 55 percent of the voters, something the district thinks is possible.

“We did a bond feasibility study in late April, early May and according to the consultant’s report, 65 to 70 percent approved of the bond,” said Superintendent Jamie Castellanos. “That gives us a green light to go forward, but it’s not a sure thing. The 65 to 70 percent includes both those who will definitely support the bond and those who are likely to support, which could change to a “no.” We have a lot to do between now and November.”

Castellanos said that building a high school in Castaic was at the top of the priority list, since the project has been in the works for several years. Modernization of Hart High, Sierra Vista and Placerita Junior Highs are also planned, with portables already on some campuses in preparation for construction.

Fine arts education centers – read performance space – for students at Saugus and Canyon High Schools are also planned.

“We’re hoping to make those a reality,” Castellanos said.
Modernization of Valencia and Bowman High Schools are also on the list. For a complete breakdown of projects that will be financed if the bond passes is available here .
