Hart District Moves Ahead With EIR Plans For Castaic High

hartdistlogoBLACKThe William S. Hart District is moving ahead with its plans to build Castaic High School on the proposed Romero Canyon site as it has issued official paperwork that will lead to the Environmental Impact Report required for building.

On February 24, the district issued a Notice of Preparation for the Draft EIR to analyze potential environmental impacts that may result from the project.

In August, 2010, the District chose three firms to complete the required preparation: The Planning Center was put in charge of the environmental report for CEQA, Geolabs of Westlake Village was charged with independent geological studies (including 36 investigative excavations to study potential landslide areas on the site) and the RMA Group, which would serve as peer reviewers of Geolabs’ work and as a liaison between the District and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. The combined cost for those consultants should not exceed $466,358.

The site, which is currently undeveloped, but within the approved Violin Canyon Development, includes large landslide complexes in the hillside areas and has been identified, along with the surrounding area, as a high fire hazard.

The school is expected to open in 2014 with ninth grade students, adding a grade each year as students promote. Some portions of the document lists 2013 as a potential opening date, district officials said that information was there in case development moved at an accelerated rate and a 2013 opening was possible.

The District is holding a scoping meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 in the district board room at 21515 Centre Pointe Parkway. All interested parties are invited to attend and present information they believe should be addressed in the EIR.

Copies of the Notice of Preparation are available via email from the District spokeswoman, Gail Pinsker, at gpinsker@hartdistrict.org, or by mail request to her at the District Office (address below).

The comment period closes on March 28 and all comments must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on that date. Comments should be send to Tom Cole, Chief Operations Officer, Wm. S. Hart Union High School District, 21515 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita CA 91350. Comments may also be sent via email to tcole@hartdistrict.org. The name of the project should be included in the subject heading. Mr. Cole can also be reached by calling 661-259-0033, ext. 252.
