Hart District Schools Get Ready For Sixth Annual Mix It Up Day

hartdistlogoREDAll 15 Hart District junior high and high schools are planning activities for tomorrow’s Mix It Up Day. Mix It Up Day is a day when schools host activities designed to break students out of their normal group of friends at lunchtime. Hart District schools have been participating in this national event since 2005, and in 2009, achieved the goal of every school in the Hart District, participating.

This District-wide participation level earned the district the title of Model School District and is now featured on the Teaching Tolerance website. The Hart District is the only district, nationally, to have participation on all campuses.

“The district programs are featured on the www.tolerance.org website in the hope that other schools and districts will learn from our success and work to create inclusive school communities through Mix It Up,” commented Greg Lee, the district’s director of human resources and equity services. He noted that the Southern Poverty Law Center, creator of Mix It Up Day, is one of the leading civil rights advocacy organizations in America, today.

Some schools participate on the designated day, while others are spreading activities over the week. The focus on holding events at the same time throughout all Hart District schools is to put a major, community-wide emphasis on breaking down social barriers. In most schools, the student government leaders organize the activities, with culturally-themed clubs on some campuses sharing the responsibility for Mix It Up.

Some activities this week include: A “Scrabble Dress Day” at Golden Valley High School, where students will plan with their friends to wear shirts or letters that spell a word, then will be asked to scramble together with other students to spell new words; Sierra Vista Junior High is creating a “Tree of Tolerance” where students will post messages on special colored paper representing various personal experiences. Some schools will feature scavenger hunts, conga lines and tug-of-war, and some may have special classroom activities for teachers to oversee.

Posters throughout the campuses will celebrate diversity in honor of Mix It Up Day, and students from all Hart District schools are looking forward to “mixing it up.”
