Haskell Canyon Open Space To Be Dedicated Monday Morning

khts_citymatters_scvlogoThe city’s latest open space acquisition will be dedicated to the public on Monday and the Santa Clarita City Council invites you to come and be part of the festivities.

The Haskell Canyon Open Space ceremonies will be held near Haskell Canyon at Copper Hill Road. The event begins at 11 a.m.

“Preserving open space in and around our City is a top priority for the City of Santa Clarita and our community,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean. “Haskell Canyon is a notable addition in maintaining open space preservation, wildlife connectivity, and expansion of the City’s greenbelt buffer, which provides residents with additional trail opportunities.”

Haskell Canyon is a 526-acre site located in the Angeles National Forest, just north of the City. The area is full of coastal sage scrub and oak woodlands, and threatened and endangered habitat and species. Future planning efforts include trail design, landscape cleanup and signage to accommodate equestrians, bicycles, and hiker’s needs.

Originally slated for development of more than 500 homes in the unincorporated area of the Santa Clarita Valley, this site would have significantly impacted traffic with an additional 5,000 trips per day on Copper Hill Road, Benz Road and Bouquet Canyon Road.

The City Council approved this acquisition on May 24,  and the Parks Planning and Open Space staff completed the $3,135,000 acquisition of Haskell Canyon on June 24, thanks to Open Space Preservation District funds and the Land Bank Mitigation Fund.

This latest acquisition joins five others to make a natural greenbelt and nature corridor around the city. Other properties include the East Walker Ranch, 140 acres in Placerita Canyon and the first parcel acquired with the Open Space funding; Elsmere Canyon, once threatened as a dumpsite in the Newhall Pass, now part of the Rim of the Valley Corridor; Golden Valley Ranch, along Highway 14 between Via Princessa and Golden Valley Road; the Rodda Open Space, 243 acres on the eastern side of the city, connecting us with the Angeles National Forest, part of the Santa Clara River watershed and the Castaic and San Gabriel mountain ranges and Quigley Canyon, 160 acres bordering equestrian property in Placerita Canyon.

Directions to the Haskell Canyon site: Copper Hill Drive East, past Haskell Canyon, left onto High Ridge Drive, right on Ranchview Terrace. For more information, and to RSVP for the event, call 255-4939.
