An African-American man was attacked Saturday night when two men approached him on Benida Lane in Canyon Country and started shouting at him.

The victim was sitting in his 1981 Ford Mustang with a woman when two men walked up to the vehicle and began to yell.

“The first suspect came over and said some black guy had disrespected him when he was with his mother a while ago,” explained Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita sheriff’s station. “The victim had never had any contact with the man before and didn’t know him.”

Cambra said that the victim got out of his car and a second suspect hit the man in the face, bloodying his lip. As the victim ran from the vehicle, the two suspects chased him. The victim flagged down a passerby and asked them to call 911.

While the chase was underway, the female passenger got out of the car and two more suspects got out of the suspect’s vehicle with a baseball bat and hammer. They smashed all six windows and three quarter-panels of the victim’s car, causing at least $2,000 damage.

Deputies arrived and caught one suspect, Cameron Campbell, 21, a male Hispanic. Cambra said the other three suspects are still at large. Their vehicle is described as a red SUV, possibly a Ford Expedition. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 255-1121.

Campbell is being held at the Santa Clarita station in lieu of $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Santa Clarita Superior Court on Tuesday.
