Haunted Jailhouse To Open Sunday

Award-winning annual event features frights, food and fun – and a not-so-scary tour for little ones.

With Halloween fast approaching, it’s time for goblins to rattle their chains and jangle the cell doors at the 19th annual Haunted Jailhouse hosted by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, the station will come alive with activities and children in costume will parade through the parking lot at Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard.

The event involves several local charities and their volunteers, including the Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club, Miracles through Hope Chapter of the City of

Hope , SCV Newhall Optimist Club, Association to Aid Domestic Violence, and the City of

Santa Clarita . In and around the station will be department displays, game booths in the parking lot and plenty of opportunity to be frightened inside the hauntingly fun jail cells.

This event has been so spectacular and innovative that it has received the Award of Merit from the 1991 Governor’s Crime Prevention Awards Program, sponsored by the California Stop Crime Coalition. The event also received the 1990 Productivity and Quality Award from the Los Angeles County Productivity Commission.

Due to its popularity, the event is now being duplicated at other sheriff’s stations, such as Cresenta Valley Station, San Dimas Station, East Los Angeles Station and Norwalk Station.

The combined effort of the organizations involved provides a safe, fun and adventurous Halloween outing that the community looks forward to each year. It also continues to build a relationship with the children and adults in the community.

Along with a variety of displays, kids and their parents will enjoy a moon bounce, music, food and plenty of challenging game booths provided by non-profit organizations from throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. Game tickets will vary in cost for the game booths throughout the event.

This year the event will include a Halloween costume contest, with prizes for each age category. The age categories and times of the contests are as follows: Under 2 will be judged at 12:30 pm, ages 2-4 at 1 pm, ages 5-7 at 1:30 pm, ages 8-10 at 2 pm, ages 11-12 at 2:30 pm and ages 13 to adults at 3 pm.

Along with the regular tour of the Sheriff’s Haunted Jailhouse decorated by the SCV Boys and Girls Club, a separate tour is specifically designed for children under 6 years old. A suggested donation of $1 per person is requested at the entry gate to benefit the Club and its programs.
