HAZMAT Situation Near Castaic Prompts Long Investigation

Update: 6:40 p.m.

Around 9:30 this morning, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from the Santa Clarita and Palmdale stations responded to a possible suicide involving hazardous materials on Lake Hughes Road near Dry Gulch motorway, east of Castaic.

A vehicle was found 100 yards off the roadway, and responding officers found signs posted on the windows that described dangerous materials in the car. Those signs led investigators to believe that a suicide was taking place, or had already been completed.

According to Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Steve Whitmore, a female was found deceased in the car. Investigators believe that hydrogen sulphide gas was present, and that discovery prompted a long and careful clearance procedure by LA County HAZMAT teams.

Hydrogen sulfide gas can be made through a mixture of select chemicals, which produce the fatal fumes. The process is a known method of suicide.

During the investigation, northbound Lake Hughes Road was closed at Castaic Lake, and southbound traffic was stopped north of Dry Gulch for several hours.

The deceased woman’s identity is still unknown, pending a coroner’s office investigation.

No further information is available at this time, however KHTS AM-1220 will report updates as soon as they are available.
