Abiomed, maker of Impella®, travels across the country to demonstrate to hospital staff members on how to use the device by sending a large truck with a training simulator in order to move to various locations.

Impella is a temporary device that assists the heart in pumping blood to the body’s vital organs, allowing the heart to rest and potentially recover, according to Henry Mayo officials.

Abiomed came to Santa Clarita Friday to demonstrate to hospital staff members and representatives of the hospital how to use the device.

“We do have the device at Henry Mayo, but this demonstration will introduce it to staff, and some staff members will receive specific training,” said Patrick Moody, director of marketing and public relations.

Rosella Dolan, RN, and Cardiovascular Services nurse navigator at Henry Mayo, referred to the device as a “safety net” and a “game changer”.

“We can insert through the groin, through various different access sites, as opposed to opening the chest and doing open heart surgery,” said Dolan.

Dolan explained that most patients are deemed high risk and with the device being so small, it makes it possible for doctors to have the time and the stability, hemodynamically, to do the interventions that these patients need.

The cardiovascular department, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital representatives, and Abiomed representatives attended the event.
