BalaCore Owner Invents Equipment, Opens Gym In Santa Clarita

During her years as a personal trainer, BalaCore Valencia owner Ellen Como grew frustrated with the options available for her clients. Equipment had to be modified in order to be long enough for the core workouts Como wanted to teach.

At a training event at College of the Canyons, Como used large track pads generally used by high jumpers.

“I would put a group of my clients on the pad and take them through strength training moves along with core work,” Como said.

From this experience, Como created the now patented BalaCore Bench. The BalaCore Bench is, “a strength training bench with an air filled bladder and is the next evolution in fitness training,” according to the BalaCore website.

“The BalaCore Bench allows you to perform strength training exercises while forcing your body to maintain balance by activating your core. From the very first prototype, I was hooked along with every client asked to experiment with our invention,” says Como.

Como came up with the name BalaCore while laying on the equipment. She decided that the combination of the words balance and core, seemed perfect.

The materials used in the BalaCore products contribute to sustainability with a mandated portion of the product and packaging consisting of recycled material.

BalaCore is, “personal training in a class setting,” Como said.

“At BalaCore, your core is engaged the entire time, and it is a high intensity workout, but most importantly form is our No. 1 priority,” Como said.

Like many other fitness communities, BalaCore is a close-knit group.

“We are like a family, we get to know everyone personally,” Como said.

BalaCore Valencia opened six months ago, but Como has been working in the fitness industry for more than 30 years.

She is a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer and master fitness expert. She has also acted as a testimonial trainer and cast member for numerous fitness product infomercials, as well as being a fit model.

Ellen Como will also be hosting a fitness radio show on KHTS AM-1220 debuting Sept. 24.

“Although the workouts are intense, there is virtually no joint pain because of the way BalaCore Bench is designed to be filled with air,” Como said.

For $99 a month, clients have full access to the studio, which includes all equipment, small group classes, and a personalized nutrition plan.

BalaCore employees are also offering a free week to anyone with no strings attached.

Como personally plans each persons nutrition plan based on their life, and personal preferences.

“Everyone has something that they won’t want to give up, and I take that into account when I plan their nutrition plan,” Como said.
