Now that the holiday season is over, adult children are often thrust into the role of caregiver after realizing that their senior loved ones need extra help with activities of daily living.

“My message to the caregivers of the world out there is, you’ve got to take care of yourself,” said McNamara. “I see all the time where we have the adult children who are just running themselves ragged caring for Mom and Dad.”

McNamara calls these individuals “the sandwich generation” because they are bouncing back and forth between taking care of their kids and their senior parents, which often results in them burning themselves out physically and emotionally.

“That’s where someone like Comfort Keepers In Home Care comes in,” McNamara said. “Anything that doesn’t take a medical license to do, anything that you would do as an adult daughter to make sure Mom or Dad or Grandma are safe is what my caregivers do.”

These activities of daily living can include making sure the senior is eating nutritionally, staying hydrated, taking their medications on time, getting to their doctor’s appointments, getting help in and out of the shower to prevent falls and more.

“I always tell my folks to be proactive, not reactive,” McNamara said. “Don’t wait until Mom or Dad has to go to the hospital and now they’re being discharged and now they absolutely need home care.”

He continued, “The thing is, our seniors want to stay in their own home, and we as adult children want to keep them there.”
