With many families coming together for the first time in awhile, McNamara says that the holidays are a great time to pay extra attention to whether or not senior loved ones may need some extra help, and to come up with a plan for the future regardless.

“If you haven’t had ‘the talk’ already, then maybe this holiday season, in a very positive (way, say), ‘We all know what the roadmap is going to lead to — let’s talk about how you want it to look as we go there,’” McNamara said.

Instead of waiting for a senior loved one to end up in the hospital after falling and breaking a hip or because they were mismanaging their medication, McNamara encourages adult children to be proactive.

This can not only help prevent these kinds of emergency trips to the hospital and the potential long-term consequences that come with them, it can help make things much less stressful for both the senior and their family when the time does come to make a change.

“There’s no decision to be made if you have ‘the talk’ before it’s an issue,” McNamara said. “Down the road, maybe a little bit of home care is what they need, to come in and make sure they’re eating well and taking them on their errands and keeping the house clean — that type of thing.”

He continued, “Or it may become more of an issue as we approach those golden years. The journey that you and your parents choose, it could be assisted living, it could be a plethora of things. But have the talk before it’s an issue.”

However, in the case that the senior is no longer making the best decision for themselves, McNamara advises enlisting the help of doctors and home care professionals like Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita.

“If their decisions aren’t in the best interest of themselves anymore, that’s when we have to step in,” he said. “Start to create a team, if you will, that’s looking out for their best interest as they want to age in place. What resources have to be brought into play so that they can age in place?”

He concluded, “Sometimes a helping hand is all that’s needed to allow that to happen.”
