McNamara noted that Thanksgiving is ranked as the top holiday when families get together, and it’s often the one and only time every year adult children may see their senior parents or loved ones in person.

Phone calls that typically take place more frequently throughout the year tend to revolve around the children, the grandchildren, weather and other “comfortable” topics, according to McNamara.

“They might have a real ability to maybe mask some cognitive impairment that’s creeping in, and you certainly can’t see any physical impairments unless you’re Facetiming,” said McNamara. “So I really stress to our adult kids, when you go to see your parents maybe that one and only time during the year, pay attention.”

A few things McNamara advised checking on when visiting senior loved ones include:

  • Is there food in the refrigerator? Is it rotting?
  • How does the house look? Are there unpaid bills or unopened mail piling up?
  • Do they look or feel thinner when you hug them?
  • Are they taking their medications on time?
  • Does their personal hygiene seem to be slipping?
  • How are their motor skills while driving?

Unless it seems to be an emergency, McNamara recommends not “intruding” on the holiday by bringing up any potential issues — especially at the family holiday dinner –, but addressing it afterward.

“Don’t be a bull in a china shop, a disrespectful know-it-all, getting in there thinking you can run Mom and Dad’s life,” McNamara cautioned. “Be respectful.”
