“A lot of times our seniors don’t drink enough water and they don’t want to turn on that air conditioning to save a few pennies,” McNamara noted.

As a result, these seniors can become dehydrated, often developing a urinary tract infection that can have symptoms of disorientation and confusion, according to McNamara.

“So we think, ‘Oh, Mom’s slipping — she’s got Alzheimer’s,’” he said. “No, she’s just got a UTI. So again, make sure your parents and everybody are hydrating during the hot days of summer.”

With many adult children in Santa Clarita acting as the “sandwich generation” and trying to take care of both their own kids and their aging parents, McNamara noted that Comfort Keepers Home Care can step in and help with activities of daily living — including making sure seniors stay hydrated.

“We become that adult child, if you will,” McNamara said. “We assist with all activities of daily living, when it comes to helping our seniors with meal preparation, errands, (taking them) to doctors, personal hygiene if necessary, taking their medications on time.”

While some seniors may be resistant to the idea of getting professional help, McNamara emphasized that Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita staff are not nurses, and are more like personal assistants instead.

“Our seniors are proud and independent. They don’t want to be a burden — ‘I don’t need a nurse,’” McNamara said. “Well we’re not nurses. We’re personal assistants, concierge, if you will.”

McNamara advised paying attention to things like a senior’s hygiene, cleanliness of the home, if the fridge is stocked and if bills are being paid on time.

“Just keep your eye out for those types of things,” he said. “Be observant… And if they need a helping hand in the home, that’s what home care does. That’s what Comfort Keepers is all about.”
