The president of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita is helping the public understand the difference between home care and home health for seniors.

“A lot of folks don’t understand the difference between home care — like (what) Comfort Keepers does — versus home health,” said Myles McNamara on a recent “The Senior Hour” on KHTS AM-1220.

McNamara described home health as a registered nurse who is prescribed by a physician to come to the patient’s home for a specific medical task, and then they leave once it’s performed.

“A nurse will pop in and do some medical stuff, and boom, they’re gone,” he said, noting these services are usually covered by Medicare or other insurance.

In contrast, home care professionals will accept the “baton” being handed off by the nurse, so to speak, and assist with non-medical tasks and activities of daily living.

“When (the nurse) leaves, Comfort Keepers can step in and say, okay, now let’s get a shower or maybe it’s a bed bath, or let’s cook a nice meal, let’s make sure you’re hydrating, let’s throw in a load of laundry, let’s go for a walk — whatever the care plan calls for,” McNamara explained.

“Then we go that extra level,” McNamara added. “Do we have nice grab bars in the shower, (or) some of the other supportive devices that protect our seniors?”
