Collagen is the substance that gives our skin its elasticity. It is essential to keep our skin from sagging and forming jowls, nasolabial folds and marionette lines at the corners of the mouth. Collagen also keeps our pores from expanding and the face from appearing “creepy”.
“Without collagen we form fine lines and wrinkles, like crow’s feet and forehead lines,” states Dr. Craig Inger, MD, a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and owner of DermaCure of Valencia.

Fibroblasts in our skin are responsible for collagen production. In most of us this process stops at age 35 unless these cells [fibroblasts] are stimulated. Without stimulation the collagen we have begins to degenerate thus aging us.
Dr. Ingber explains, “Many lasers work by triggering the fibroblasts to produce collagen. The Titan helps our bodies form collagen in the deep dermal layer, which reduces [or prevents] the sagging we all eventually get in the jowls or upper neck and mid-face. The Fraxel laser stimulates collagen in a more superficial skin layer. This fills in fine lines, wrinkles, and even acne scars leaving us with a greatly improved texture.”
“One of the best techniques to build collagen is the least used or understood,” says Dr. Ingber. “Certain therapeutic products act to stimulate our fibroblasts. Retin A is a prescription cream that can also be dispensed in a doctor’s office. It not only builds collagen but also causes a more rapid turn over of our outer skin layer. Retin A does have drawbacks. It usually causes flaking and redness.”
Vitamin C serum [in the proper form] and other antioxidants applied topically can protect our skin from the sun and other harmful environmental oxidizers. It also stimulates collagen. These products must be in the correct form to insure proper absorption.

Dr. Ingber gives us his insight. “The newest and best of the collagen builders is Skin Medica’s TNS [Tissue Nutrient Solution]. This company, founded by a prominent dermatologist, has actually grown human fibroblasts from which they extracted 101 growth factors.
The solution known as TNS is 93.6% pure growth factors stabilized in an airless pump dispenser to prevent oxidation. These are same growth factors that our fibroblasts employ to stimulate collagen. The benefits of this product have been published in 3 different Dermatologic medical journals in which collagen formation [60% increase in 6 months] is documented by skin biopsies and microscopic examination.”
When it comes to skin rejuvenation, collagen is the “magic potion” and lasers and therapeutic products are the ways to get it.
Both are available at DermaCure Medical Aesthetics in Valencia.
