“During laser hair removal, a concentrated beam of light is aimed at the hair,” explains Dr. Craig Inger, MD, a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and owner of DermaCure of Valencia. “The light is absorbed by the pigment, which damages the follicle enough to retard future growth.”

In order to achieve the maximum hair reduction results, multiple procedures are required in order to damage the hair follicles that are creating the hair.  Dr. Ingber elaborate, “Unfortunately, the follicle itself does not often provide a very recognizable target for the laser. 

Most lasers rely on the dark hair strand to serve as a target.  Hair that is actively growing (otherwise known as the Anagen growth phase) provides a link to the root of the follicle.  Only about 20% of hair is in the Anagen phase at any point in time.  A minimum of 5 treatments will provide 80-90% permanent hair reduction depending on skin type and the color of your hair.”

“Because the laser treatment uses the hair strand to target the follicle, all treated hair will temporarily be removed.  Over the course of several weeks, much of the hair will return although its growth will be significantly slowed and some of the hair will be finer and less noticeable.  Technically, as soon as re-growth occurs, another treatment can be given,” assures Dr. Ingber.
