Did You Know That Ultra Violet Rays Can Be Harmful To Your Hair

Sun_Pic1We all know that during the intense heat that this summer has brought the Santa Clarita valley, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging Ultra Violet rays. What might be overlooked is the fact that our hair can take a beating from these harmful rays as well.

Essentially UV rays are invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun. UV rays can burn the eyes, hair and skin. Despite some of the benefits that the suns rays can do for our environment, too much sun exposure can damage our health in more ways than one. Our skin is the first organ to be affected by the harmful UVA and UVB rays characterized by a red, painful burn that can last for weeks. The second organ that is affected by the sun is our hair.

UVA and UVB rays have the power to damage the hair from the cuticle to the inner structure of the hair. Some signs that hair has been affected by sun damage are the color is faded, broken or split ends, frizzy hair, weakened and thinning hair. Luckily, there are some helpful tips on how to protect your precious locks. Make sure to wear either a baseball cap or a long brimmed sun hat when exposed to the sun for long periods of time as this will protect your color and follicles from damage. Also, you can opt to use shampoos and conditioners that contain protective sunscreen, or use a leave-in conditioner that is designed to protect hair from UV rays.

Last, when it comes to the overall health of your hair, just say no to harmful products that will indefinitely strip your hair of moisture, color and essential oils. Alcohol, peroxide, lemon juice and sun activated hair lightening products will eventually do more harm than good for your hair. These products will dry out your hair, wash out the color in your hair and will create a plethora of broken hair and split ends. Even though quick color results will be seen, in the long run you will end up spending more time and money attempting to fix the damage done.

The lesson here is, even though the suns rays can have positive benefits for us and the environment, too much of it, too often, can sometimes cause irreversible damage to our skin and hair.
