Ladies and gentleman, have you ever heard of the saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, the same saying can be applied to your shampoo. Just because the shampoo bottle is dazzling and it smells like juicy mango, doesn’t mean your hair is getting the best treatment.

One would think that the more expensive and flashier hair product is more beneficial to the health of your scalp and hair, but the hidden chemicals in these products can actually do more damage than you realize. Most of the shampoos on the market today contain a few specific types of potentially damaging chemicals; Ammonium Laurel Sulfate, sodium Laurel Sulfate and Paraben. Surprisingly, sulfates are present in about 95% of commercially available shampoos.  

Sulfates are inexpensive to make and you don’t have to use much to get rid of dirt and grime. Sulfate is a chemical used to produce a rich sudsy lather when mixed with water. The sulfate lather is what lifts dirt and oil away from the scalp and gives you that squeaky clean feeling after you wash your hair. Paraben is also a type of chemical used in your shampoo to prevent bacterial growth, but can also harmful to your skin. These types of chemicals are not beneficial because they strip your hair of moisture and other essential oils, the chemicals damage your hair follicles and hair color over time.

Also, sulfates and parabens can be the cause of dry and irritated skin, which can lead to other more serious skin related issues. One alternative option to using a generic shampoo is to go organic. Even though organic shampoos don’t create a rich lather and don’t smell like a burst of fresh fruit, they are the best known alternative to harsh shampoos.
