Michaels has been practicing in Santa Clarita since 1991, and is renowned for her work as a naturopathic doctor, licensed psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist.
“It’s very rewarding, it’s very empowering and it’s very exciting to see someone access the best parts of themselves and get out of their own way,” Michaels said, “and to access their — whatever you want to call it — higher self, universal self … and allow that to guide them to move toward positive outcome.”

Rather than just focus on treating the physical or mental when it comes to recovery from substance abuse or other issues an individual is facing, Michaels noted she believes in treating the emotional and spiritual aspects as well.
“We’re holistic beings — we’re not just bodies walking around here,” she explained. “We have a physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual part of ourselves, and I think in recovery that my perception and my perspective is that all of those things needs to be addressed.”
Sharits seconded this, noting that The Way Out Recovery SCV was created with a similar approach in mind.
“There are some models for excellent treatment modalities and there are some models for not-so-good treatment modalities,” Sharits said. “We decided to really try to offer the community of Santa Clarita something that was a more compassionate, more gentle, more holistic, more maybe safe and healing environment.”
For example, someone seeking treatment services from The Way Out Recovery SCV can participate in things like mindfulness and meditation exercises, outdoor activities and rhythm therapy with drumming in addition to other drug and alcohol outpatient treatment.
“In the five months that we’ve been open, we’ve watched some of our participants really respond well to that,” Sharits said.
In Michaels’ experience, incorporating these kinds of activities and exercises into a person’s overall recovery treatment plan tends to result in a higher success rate because it strives to heal a person in every aspect. She noted that the relapse rates for those that do not do so “are a little disappointing.”
She continued, “I think that looking and working in the spiritual perspective and physical and emotional perspective and mental perspective, all at the same time and simultaneously is the way to the greatest success.”
