“We truly believe in talking about the painful things that happen as a result of drinking and drugs and addiction publically and loudly and out in the community as an attempt to raise awareness so that nobody else has to lose their life,” said Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV.
Sharits gave the example of a 37-year-old Santa Clarita mother of six who was killed in a DUI crash in October, Katie Evans, referencing the bravery of her husband, Jacob, for publicly speaking out against drunk driving following the tragedy.

Referring to those who may not say anything to an intoxicated person about to get behind the wheel because “it’s none of their business,” Jacob told KHTS:
“I’ve never actually had a drink in my life and Katie never had a drink in her life, and yet drunk driving is definitely our business… My hope is that people will not only not drink and drive, but they won’t tolerate other people drinking and driving — they’ll stand up and stop people from making a bad decision.”
Sharits himself has two boys at 5 and 8 years old, and has already began to have conversations with them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
“If you think it’s too young to start talking to your kids about addiction and drugs and stuff, it’s never too young,” he said. “I wholeheartedly believe in that, and every opportunity I have to … talk to them about drugs and about addiction, I’m all for it.”
Sharits continued, “Addiction and the stuff that happens around drug use and alcohol use, it is absolutely by the numbers the biggest killer in the world, but yet it’s one of the subjects and one of the topics that people are most afraid to talk about… so we want to be sort of champions of, and models for, talking about it.”
