“Advanced healthcare directives for our seniors are paramount because if they’re unable to speak on their own behalf for a short or ongoing period of time, the advanced healthcare directive indicates who they want speaking on their behalf,” said Myles McNamara, president of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita.

When planning an advanced healthcare directive, it is important to identify an agent that will be capable of executing the directive when needed.

“Sometimes we suggest you don’t make it a family member,” McNamara said. “Your agent is going to be following your roadmap so there won’t be any gray areas and there won’t be any guilt decisions made if you really talk about all of the hypothetical situations that may or may not occur.”

“If you do have an advanced healthcare directive, a family trust or an estate plan you need to review it every few years — if not even more frequently,” McNamara added.

McNamara points out that changes in laws or personal dynamics with your agent are two factors that should be considered when advanced healthcare directives are reviewed with an estate planning or elder law attorney.

After advanced healthcare directives are secured, families can work to ensure the daily wellbeing of the seniors in their lives.

Seniors want to stay in their homes where they’ve made decades worth of memories and sometimes all they need to do so is a helping hand, according to McNamara.

“We have a lot of our adult children who are trying to operate 26 hours a day to make sure their children are taken care of and also check in on mom and dad,” said McNamara.

Comfort Keepers In Home Care Santa Clarita can partner with families to ensure that the seniors in their lives are eating well, maintaining personal hygiene and are safely living in their own home.

“What Comfort Keepers In Home Care does,” said McNamara, “is create a care plan where we will come in and provide that helping hand.”
