Editorial: It Might Be Hormonal, By Doctor Polucki

Ask a friend if, at times, you seem a little moody. If they change the subject or run away, you might have a hormone problem.

Do you have skin problems, no matter how you eat or what products you use?

Do you rely on coffee, soda or energy drinks to get through the day?

Do you have trouble sleeping?

Have you had fibroids?

When my wife went through a hellacious menopause 15 years too early and just six months earlier our medical doctor assured us that we could have 10 kids if we wanted to, I realized that conventional hormone tests had failed to detect the coming storm.

After a year of not sleeping and lining the bed with beach towels due to severe night sweats, we discovered bio-identical hormones. Even after 10 years of health science courses, the very same courses that every medical doctor learns about hormones, I had no idea what a bio-identical hormone was, if it was safe or if it worked.

My wife started taking a compound of bio-identical hormones.  After a few months of temporary improvement and several hundred dollars later, my wife relapsed. We were desperate and believed we had already tried everything.

We were introduced to a colleague from San Diego, consulted with him, took some different tests that measured hormone, digestive and detoxification function, found that there were hidden functional problems in the liver and digestive tract that blocked the effectiveness of prior treatments.

She took some different products designed to restore functional pathways in the liver digestive tract and adrenal glands, followed some simple lifestyle advice and within two weeks, my wife felt 80% better.

When I saw the power of functional medicine help my wife when nothing else could, I went back to school so I could help fill this desperate gap in health care.

I learned what they never taught us in school. All doctors learn the diseases and conventionally acceptable treatments for each but when it comes to spotting the early warning signs of hormonal imbalance, interpreting the right labs and offering a simple, affordable, natural, effective solution seeing a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner can save you a lot of needless suffering.
