Headache-Free Biodynamic Wine – A Step Beyond Organic

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

While I like wine, I don’t like the side effects of many conventionally produced wines.

If I can avoid a headache from a few glasses of wine, I want to know more.

So I started trying organic wines and I did not get headaches from them.

Some organic wines tasted better than others. But then I discovered an even higher standard than organic.

Biodynamic farming started in the 1920s when concerns arose from the increased use of toxic chemicals in conventional farming.

Biodynamic farmers view the farm as a self-sustaining organism.

So homeopathic remedies, herbal medicine compost and teas take the place of pesticides and fertilizer.

Additionally, an astronomical calendar helps determines planting, irrigation, pest control and harvest times.

And we found a biodynamic vineyard in Los Olivos.

Winemaker Steve Beckman started applying biodynamic farming principles to his vineyard in 2003 and Beckman Vineyards got certified biodynamic in 2009.

And he believes the extra steps of producing biodynamic wine bring improved quality to Beckman Wines.

Recently my wife Toni and I had the pleasure of visiting Beckman Vineyards.

Our experience rated an A+ on all levels! We LOVE the staff! Even though they were planning the launch event for their new Grenache Rose, everyone generously gave us their time and attention.Get Better with Dr. Polucki

We felt welcomed like family from the vineyard owner Tom Beckman, his son the winemaker Steve Beckman,
their marketing director Taylor Hart and our excellent wine server Chris.

Most important – we enjoyed our wine-tasting without getting a headache!

The wine tasting was delicious and outstandingly informative, providing key information for this article.

Of course we went home with some Beckman wine. We especially like their crowd pleasing Grenache Rose, the 100 percent Grenache and the slightly bigger tasting Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre Cuvee.

First Beckman’s Rose tastes of watermelon, cherry and spicy strawberry.

Light and easy, this Rose feels fun to drink.

Then the Grenache tastes just a bit more intense with crisp red berries and spice with a silky texture.

And finally the Barrel Select GSM Cuvee makes me feel like taking an extra moment to experience the tastes of pomegranate, blackberry and milk chocolate.

We love headache-free biodynamic Beckman wines and give the winery a 5 Star review.
