Dr. Thomas Polucki, top Santa Clarita chiropractor and nutrition advisor, shares the secret to never having a question about nutrition again.

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

Are you frustrated with conflicting information about diet, supplements, weight loss, anti-aging medicines, and confused about how they’re related?

Have you ever wondered why a new fad diet hits the headlines every few months or why opinions keep shifting on supplements?

If you want to end the guesswork, you’ll to want to read on to find out how.

First, you have to ask yourself a few questions.

Have you ever been on a best-selling diet?

Did the weight loss results last? How is that miracle supplement working for you now?

Why do you think diets and supplements work sometimes, not always, and for some people, not  others?

What if there was a way you could easily find out with absolute certainty whether any specific food or supplement was good for you or not?

Good news: There is a way.

What if you could know, using the most accepted scientific criteria, whether a food or supplement was going to produce a positive or negative result — and not after trying it for three months, three weeks or even three days, but within one hour?

Even better. So you can not only find out for yourself, but you can also do it faster and easier than you might think.

What is Cortisol?

There is a natural drug in your body called cortisol. It’s used by conventional medicine to extinguish inflammation instantaneously, but your body makes small amounts of cortisol all the time. In fact, your daily cycle, like a woman’s monthly cycle, is driven by cortisol. Cortisol is made in the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys and produce many other chemicals that help comprise the chemical control system of your body.

Referred to as a “master hormone,” cortisol controls immune and injury repair functions; influences genetic expression; regulates protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism; regulates bone, muscle, connective, digestive and nerve tissue health; manages detoxification pathways; and regulates other hormones and brain chemicals responsible for sleep, moods and thought processes.

How Cortisol Helps Test What Foods or Supplements Trigger Inflammation

Any inflammatory process, anywhere in your body, with or without symptoms, triggers a cortisol response. Inflammation causes damage and cortisol starts the healing process. Chronic inflammation from inappropriate diet, un-rehabilitated injuries (the everyday aches and pains you try to ignore), asymptomatic infections, or just overdoing it at work or play can deplete your body’s ability to handle any kind of new stress. The result is premature aging and increased risk of diseases.

Any doctor’s examination requires measuring the vital statistics: pulse rate, blood pressure and temperature. In functional medicine, we use these globally accepted measurements of how a body is working to determine if you are having a cortisol, or bad, response to what you ate in the past hour.

Cortisol raises blood pressure and pulse while dropping temperature. So if you want to know if whole grain bread or the latest must-have supplement is good for you or not, try this simple test:

  1. Sit down and relax for about three minutes.
  2. Take your blood pressure, pulse and temperature.
  3. Eat your test food or supplement.
  4. Go about your normal activity, but nothing too stressful.
  5. Half an hour later, repeat steps 1 and 2.
  6. Did your blood pressure and pulse go up? Did your temperature go down?
  7. If they did, then you are having a bad reaction and the test food or supplement is not good for you.

Keep track of the foods that cause the adverse reactions, and eliminate them from your diet. Then keep track of changes in how you feel because of that change in diet. By methodically eliminating foods or supplements that cause inflammation and the toxins that go with them, you will improve the way you feel.

With this kind of systematic approach, you can test and evaluate every food and supplement yourself, and never have another question about diet or supplementation again

If  the “take another pill” approach toward health care doesn’t work for you, it’s very possible you could benefit from one of our drug-free, healthier lifestyle programs.
