Is Anti-Aging Medicine A Dangerous Hoax Or The Fountain Of Youth?

Anti-aging medicine offices are opening faster than Starbucks stores. Is there any truth to the implied Fountain of Youth hype or is anti-aging medicine all just a hoax?

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

Anti-aging medicine, while gaining popularity, has many doctors expressing legitimate concerns about whether a scientifically valid approach to stopping or reversing the inevitable decline in health as we age is possible or ethical.

Treating aging as a disease is controversial at best, but people have chased after some version of the Fountain of Youth for thousands of years. Most people would like to look and feel young for as long as possible. anti-aging-medicine-dangerous-hoax-or-fountain-youth-06241402

Until recently, anti-aging medicine was purely cosmetic and mostly in the form of surgery to give the appearance of a younger body. Now, through hormone therapy, there are ways to measure the aging process by measuring hormone levels, oxidative stress and even the length of your genetic structure that, like many of us, shrinks with age.

Many countries have banned hormone therapy to restore youth and our own FDA has placed stringent restrictions on who can prescribe anti-aging hormones and for what purposes. Hormones are powerful medicine and can easily be misused and create a harmful imbalance, even with the best intentions.

If you choose to pursue hormone therapy, do so only after consulting your primary physician, then make sure you monitor your levels every few months. Blood tests can be misleading; saliva tests give the most accurate information when measuring hormone levels

Skip Anti-Aging Medicine, Use Natural, Safer Steps to Slow Aging

There are more conservative, natural and safe ways to reduce premature aging.

Most of us know exercise can help us feel better, but more and more studies are validating the anti-aging benefits of short intense workouts and increasing the amount of low-level activities, like walking, throughout the day.

Since most premature aging is a caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, anti-inflammatory diets are promising in reducing the chemical imbalances that lead to inflammatory diseases like heart disease, certain cancers, strokes and diabetes.
