Is Lasting Shoulder Pain Relief Possible Without Drugs Or Surgery?

Your shoulder pain is trying to tell you to do something about it. Learn how to listen, stay calm and get strategic in your recovery.

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

When you have shoulder pain, you will do just about anything to find some relief. But when the anti-inflammatory drugs wear off and you are not impressed with surgery statistics, you may be ready to rethink your approach towards lasting shoulder pain relief.

You may even be ready to try no-twist, no-crack chiropractic and trade in your anti-inflammatory drugs for an anti-inflammatory diet.

Ask yourself:

Does your shoulder hurt all the time or just in certain positions or with certain movements?

Are there any positions or movements the give you relief?

Are you currently experiencing a lot of emotional or mental stress, besides the shoulder pain?

My Shoulder Injury Nearly Destroyed Me and How I Got Better

I am a Martial Artist and have had countless shoulder injuries and neck injuries over the past 30 years. With the appropriate care, even a rotator cuff tear healed for me in about six months.

But twice, I had shoulder pain so bad that it felt like I had a knife stuck in my shoulder and I was constantly squirming to find a position for relief.

I couldn’t sleep for more than 45 minutes at a time and I was always angry and sometimes nauseated. I thought my chiropractic career was over. Even getting on an airplane, more than a few times, to go get it treated, the shoulder pain would not go away for months at a time.

I finally found the answer, after wasting a lot of time needlessly suffering, facing my fears of disability and yes, even considering shoulder surgery, knowing that the odds for full recovery with shoulder surgery are not good.

But then something shifted in me and I finally found lasting relief.

Part of my shoulder pain was stress-related; there were a lot of changes going on in my life and I did not have the coping skills, at the time, to see these changes as gifts. It’s often easier to look back and appreciate a lesson than to have faith during the crisis.

Some of my shoulder pain was a collection of connective tissue injuries that did not respond to several general forms of therapy. But each of the many shoulder injuries needed to be sorted out and dealt with, one by one, so the rehabilitation of the nerves and muscles had a chance to stabilize my shoulder.

Some of my shoulder pain was from diet. I am vegetarian and for the first several years I was getting it horribly wrong, even following the best information I could find at the time. But once I learned my metabolic type and started getting my fuel mix and supplementation right, I had less inflammation and started to heal.

I cannot say that this formula will work for everyone, but if you have the kind of shoulder pain and shoulder injuries that I did and you want to avoid a lifetime of anti-inflammatory drugs, shoulder surgery and chronic shoulder pain, then you may want to try the approach I designed once I figured out what worked and didn’t work for me.

First, we determine the injured tissues — muscles, tendons, joint capsule, nerves — and if there are any other structures outside of the shoulder contributing to your shoulder pain.

Then we can decide the best course of treatment and if surgery can be avoided.

We find out if there are mental or emotional stresses contributing to your shoulder pain and give you drug-free options to manage your stress.

Anti-inflammatory diet and supplementation recommendations are tailored to your unique nutritional requirements, giving your body the most appropriate fuel to optimize the repair process.

And as soon as possible, we start you on a home-based, personalized shoulder rehabilitation exercise to keep you doing what need to do and more importantly having the emotional energy to do what you love doing with the people that matter most to you.
