Kidney Stones On The Rise, Health Tips By Dr. Thomas Polucki

Kidney Stones cause excruciating pain in the low back that often wraps around the top of your hips and into your groin. Passing kidney stones can feel like giving birth.  A stone larger than a quarter of an inch will probably not pass without medical help.

Since about 80% of kidney stones are calcium, inappropriate calcium supplementation is suspected in many cases. While many doctors still recommend calcium supplements to their female patients to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, osteoporosis is not a disease caused by calcium deficiency and every disease that increases calcium in bones actually makes them more likely to break.

If you feel you must supplement, calcium citrate is least likely form of calcium to cause kidney stones and sublingual vitamin D3/K2 helps transport calcium out of the blood and soft tissues into the bones.

Dr. Thomas Polucki Family Health hourI recommend getting calcium from vegetable because plant based calcium sources contain vitamin C, K and the minerals potassium and magnesium, which all make calcium work better in your body and reduce the risks of kidney stones.

Some good sources of calcium from vegetables include:

Hemp milk (1 cup contains 460 mg)

Blackstrap Molasses (2 tablespoons contains 400 mg)

Collard Greens (1 cup contains over 350 mg)

Turnip Greens (1 cup contains 250 mg)

Tempeh (1 cup contains 215 mg)

Kale (1 cup contains 180 mg)

Soybeans (1 cup contains 175 mg)

Tahini (2 tablespoons contains 130 mg)

Great northern beans (1 cup contains 120 mg)

Almond butter (2 tablespoons contains 85 mg)

Kidney Stones are also caused by acidic urine, the ideal urine pH to avoid stone formation is 6.5. pH strips to check your urine pH are available at most health food stores. Acidic urine is associated with an animal protein rich diet. Too much meat in your diet lowers the pH of your urine and promotes kidney stone formation. Vegetarians have far fewer kidney stones but even vegetarians have to be careful of too much spinach, tomatoes, strawberries and nuts because they contain a substances called oxalate that also contributes to kidney stone formation.

Drinking more filtered water with lemon can reduce the risk of kidney stones because more water passing through the kidneys dilutes the crystals that form kidney stones and the citric acid from the lemons neutralizes crystals ability to form into stones.

Avoiding kidney stones is a much nicer strategy than treating them.
