Since about 80% of kidney stones are calcium, inappropriate calcium supplementation is suspected in many cases. While many doctors still recommend calcium supplements to their female patients to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, osteoporosis is not a disease caused by calcium deficiency and every disease that increases calcium in bones actually makes them more likely to break.

Kidney Stones are also caused by acidic urine, the ideal urine pH to avoid stone formation is 6.5. pH strips to check your urine pH are available at most health food stores. Acidic urine is associated with an animal protein rich diet. Too much meat in your diet lowers the pH of your urine and promotes kidney stone formation. Vegetarians have far fewer kidney stones but even vegetarians have to be careful of too much spinach, tomatoes, strawberries and nuts because they contain a substances called oxalate that also contributes to kidney stone formation.
Drinking more filtered water with lemon can reduce the risk of kidney stones because more water passing through the kidneys dilutes the crystals that form kidney stones and the citric acid from the lemons neutralizes crystals ability to form into stones.
Avoiding kidney stones is a much nicer strategy than treating them.
