More Whole Grains, Is This The Worst Nutritional Advice Ever Given?

More whole grains may be the worst nutritional advice ever given to the American population.

We’ve heard for over 50 years… Eat more whole grains. And why not? Grains are cheap, easy to store and process into just about any type of convenient food like:

  • cereal
  • bread
  • pasta
  • crackers
  • chips

But are whole grains really good for you?

Grains are a good source of the fast fuel, carbohydrate and grains also have a protein called gluten.

If not for this convenient, storable protein, gluten, we would most likely still be chasing down our next meal. But as technology advanced so did the manipulation of grains to make more food at a lower cost. And as grains became cheaper, more heavily processed and more widely used we started to see more people having a problem with gluten.

Common symptoms of gluten sensitivity include:

  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Allergies
  • Chronic infections
  • Digestive symptoms
  • Sleeping problems

Without getting all technical, highly processed grain products can be irritating in most people’s digestive tract. This irritation can cause the very selective doorways between the digestive tract and the bloodstream to get jammed open creating a “leaky gut”. Any protein entering the blood stream through this back door can cause an immune response ranging from mild sensitivity symptoms, through allergies and any “itis”, inflammation, all the way to life threatening auto immune and degenerative diseases.

The first step in resolving gluten sensitivity is to remove gluten from your diet, at least temporarily, to stop irritating the surface of the digestive tract. So stay away for any food that started off as a grain.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that may help in the repair of the digestive tract tissues.
