New Cervical Cancer Prevention Screening Finds Cancer Sooner Than Ever

FDA clears computer-assisted cervical cancer screening device

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

Amazing new cancer screening technologies approved by the Food & Drug Administration can find many cancers sooner than ever, including cervical cancer.

A new computerized diagnostic tool designed to assist in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous cervical lesions called DySIS™ Advanced Cervical Imaging System is making its U.S. debut after undergoing extensive testing and review in Europe.

The new FDA-cleared medical device is helping doctors identify abnormalities on the cervix, which can sometimes escape detection during a standard colposcopy, which is a closer look at the cervix after a solution similar to vinegar is applied.

Pap tests are recommended for women from ages from 21-65 for early detection of abnormal cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer.

In the past, abnormal Pap smear results were often followed up with a colposcopy.

The acetic acid administered to the patient during a colposcopy turns abnormal cells white so they are easier to detect, a process called acetowhitening.

The standard colposcopy can be subjective and inaccurate, but the DySIS system’s new cervical cancer prevention screening is far more accurate and provides earlier detection.

“The DySIS system is a next generation colposcope, offering important advancements that improve the examination procedure for both doctors and patients,” said Kim Stebbings, U.S. president of DySIS Medical.

Stebbings said examinations performed using the DySIS Advanced Cervical Imaging System do not result in any additional out-of-pocket expenses for the patient.

Why is this new technology a big deal?

When it comes to cervical cancer, in the U.S. each year:

  • 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer
  • 4,300 die from cervical cancer

Earlier, more accurate detection of cervical cancer can save lives.

How the DySIS Colposcopy Works

With the DySIS-enhanced colposcopic examination, Dynamic Spectral Imaging records the entire acetowhitening process.

The system then produces a DySISmap™, which is like a weather map showing the precise areas of the cervix where acetowhitening is most extreme and most likely to contain abnormal cells.

The physician refers to the DySISmap and marks biopsy points that may be needed based on the information displayed as well as other examination information.
