Is “happy” a word people would use to describe you? The Secret To Happiness, And Why Some People Are Happier Than Others

What do happy people look like? Are they moving around or sitting still? Is their posture upright or slouched over? Do they interact with others or stick to themselves? Do they rely on alcohol, drugs or happy foods to feel good? Do they smile? Are they quick to laugh?

While most research focuses on the chemistry of happiness, happy hormones, what drugs or happy foods can stimulate happiness, happiness is a state of being that creates these chemicals, not the other way around.

Of course, appropriate nutrition is critical to fuel physical, mental and emotional health and some supplements may be an option for some people to improve their mood, as mentioned in previous articles.

How to be Happy: The Secret to Happiness

The secret to happiness is simple. You have to choose to be happy. That’s right: It’s a choice.

Unless we’re talking about a terminal illness or some other debilitating condition over which you have no control, there’s an easy fix, easier than you think. You simply decide you’re tired of being negative and feeling bad, and want to feel good again.

When you peel away all your excuses and rationalizations for being unhappy, and be honest with yourself, he odds are very good you’ll discover that somewhere along the line, you made the choice to feel that way. You let your mood take over your mind.

Remember that true happiness radiates from inside out, not outside in.

Be Less Afraid

Fear is the ultimate buzz-kill. Sure, a certain amount of “what-if?” thinking is good for planning and avoiding disasters. But fact is, most of the bad things we fear only ever happen because we constantly focus or obsess on them to the point they actually do happen – they become self-fulfilling prophecies.

Instead of focusing and stressing out about something toxic, you will achieve greater happiness by focusing on something more positive or productive.

Here are just four easy and natural ways to help you “get your mind right” (in the immortal words of character actor Strother Martin in the 1967 Steve McQueen movie “Cool Hand Luke”), and start travelling your path to greater happiness right now, without waiting another day.

Contribute to the growth of others.

  • Just help someone with a kind word of acknowledgment and support.
  • Volunteer for a cause you love. Don’t expect anything in return.
  • Get the focus off you and your temporary situation. Get outside yourself.

Get moving, be happy.

A brisk 20-minute walk can improve your mood. Smile the whole time and focus on everything good that’s ever happened to you, and see if you don’t feel happier.

Stay away from stimulants and depressants.

Caffeine, tobacco and alcohol disrupt your natural internal happy hormones, so you’re better off without them.

Get your head on straight.

The more the center of your head hangs in front of the center of your body, the more you add stress to every other system in your body. This slouching strain on your posture drains energy from your health, making it harder than it has to be to maintain an internal state of happiness.
