Toxic Toothpaste – Interview With Darryl Bosshardt Of ‘Earthpaste’

Are you using toxic toothpaste? Do you foam at the mouth like a clown?

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

A couple of years ago, I started using a natural toothpaste called “Earthpaste,” and though it takes a bit of getting used to, I’ve found it to be superior to conventional toothpaste. Earthpaste is an all-natural clay and salt solution for cleaning, brightening and remineralizing tooth enamel. It doesn’t have a load of chemicals and foaming agents in it, and cleans the teeth just fine.

I was curious to find out more about Earthpaste, and whether my patients, listeners and readers might benefit from knowing more about it. So I contacted the manufacturer, Redmond, based in Redmond, Utah, and connected with company spokesman Darryl Bosshardt.

Along with Earthpaste, Redmond makes and sells Real Salt (an unrefined crystal sea salt) and Redmond Clay Powder (an all-natural bentonite healing clay that has been used for generations).

We talked a bit about his background. Bosshardt grew up working for the family mineral business in Redmond, earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree at Southern Utah University and then an MBA at Western Governor’s University. He and this wife and their three boys live in nearby Heber City.

After getting acquainted, we got right to my questions about Earthpaste. Our conversation follows:

Dr. Polucki: I’m a label reader and it concerns me to see a Poison Control Center Warning on any toothpaste containing fluoride. Most health experts agree that fluoride is poison.

But we have been led to believe that toothpaste without fluoride does not protect teeth. And that as long as we don’t swallow the toothpaste containing poisonous fluoride that we are not affected.

But as a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner I know that the tissue under the tongue absorbs many chemicals directly into the blood stream.

Darryl Bosshardt: I was shocked to discover all the potentially harmful chemical additives being put into toothpaste by all the top brands.

Besides fluoride, most brands contain synthetic dyes and titanium dioxide which have both been linked to cancer and many other health issues. The Center for Science in the Public Interest found that many of the nine currently approved “food” dyes raise health concerns and published a report titled “Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks.”

Dr.Polucki: I started using Earthpaste a couple of years ago and it takes some getting used to.

First of all, it’s grayish brown instead of white and it doesn’t lather. But once you get past that, it’s actually refreshing not to have a mouthful of foaming clown makeup.

Bosshardt: The most common foaming agent, sodium lauryl sulfate has a drying effect on the soft tissues in the mouth, increasing acidity and in sensitive people can lead to mouth sores.

We decided to keep the Earthpaste formula simple and natural. We use only food grade Redmond clay, unrefined crystal sea salt from the Redmond mines, purified water, essential oils (there are five), for flavor with a pinch of xylitol for a hint of natural sweetness.

Dr.Polucki: What prompted you to make toothpaste out of clay and salt?

Bosshardt: As a kid growing up in Redmond, Utah, I never saw a tube of toothpaste on our family’s bathroom sink.

Maybe because my dad was cheap but he had us dip our wet toothbrushes into a bowl of tooth powder he created by mixing together powdered clay and ground-up crystal sea salt.

Although it didn’t taste great, brushing with the clay-salt mixture worked amazingly well and kept our mouths and gums healthy and our teeth strong, clean, white and largely cavity-free.

I decided to update the family tooth powder recipe but find ingredients to improve the taste and consistency of my father’s formula.

Dr.Polucki: I know they put fluoride in conventional toothpaste to make the enamel coating on teeth harder. Without fluoride, how does clay and salt protect teeth from cavities?

Bosshardt: We know that acid breaks down minerals and in the mouth that causes cavities. The unique mineral composition of our Redmond Clay and salt remineralizes the enamel and reduces acidity in the mouth.

Dr.Polucki: Thanks, Darryl. I’ve been a fan of Redmond Clay, Salt and Earthpaste for years.

Bosshardt: Thank you, Dr. Polucki, it’s been a pleasure.
