Where The Road To Good Health Begins

Dr. Hugo Rodier M.D. shares life-saving advice with Santa Clarita Chiropractor Dr. Thomas Polucki.

The road to good health begins with pouring your soft drink down the drain, tossing the bags of chips, and steering clear of restaurants with drive-thrus. In short, it starts with a change in attitude and lifestyle.

Most of us are familiar with the adage first spoken thousands of years ago by the Greek physician Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

“Today we know that Socrates was right: science has confirmed that when the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients are consumed by human beings in optimal amounts and absorbed into the cells, each cell is able to properly function and do its part to achieve an overall vibrant level of health for the entire body, bringing about a powerful immunity to degenerative disease,” writes integrative physician Dr. Hugo Rodier (row-dee-AY) adjunct professor of nutritional science at the University Utah’s College of Health and author of the new book, “Switching Off Chronic Disease.”

Dr. Rodier says the root cause of all chronic disease stems from four basic ongoing conditions at the cellular level. Each of these four factors, which he groups together under the acronym TOIL, triggers problems in cellular communication, repair, and renewal:

  • Toxicity: Toxins are estimated as responsible for up to 90 percent of cancers, increasing obesity and diabetes rates, and health dysfunction all the way down to the genetic level. In addition to the 80,000 chemicals infiltrating the environment, the human body produces toxins as part of the metabolic process of staying alive.
  • Oxidation: Free radicals are reactive electrons produced by normal metabolic oxidation processes. However, excessive free radical formation can wreak havoc by stealing electrons from and destabilizing healthy atoms and causing oxidative stress that damages all cell components. Oxidized fats, sugars, enzymes, and proteins then stop functioning properly and become harmful waste products poisoning the cells.
  • Inflammation: Damaged cell membranes become irritated and inflamed, interrupting their ability to communicate and organize body functions properly. Vascular tissues then respond to harmful stimuli from damaged cells by becoming inflamed themselves, making inflammation a vicious cycle of escalation.
  • Less than optimal mitochondrial energy: Most health problems are due to a breakdown in cellular communication, diminishing the energy cells need to do their job. Without proper nutrition, cells become sickly and body systems deprived. With more than six billion cells being constantly regenerated, abundant nutrition is required to support cellular needs and energy production.

“TOIL is the result of years of exposure to and/or consumption of such things as refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, impure water, processed and refined foods, trans fats, produce grown in mineral depleted soils, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, drugs, harmful microbes, insufficient sleep, stress, and nutrient deficiencies,” Dr. Rodier noted.

Dr. Rodier added that TOIL occurring within the gut can have especially serious health consequences, as not only are healthy intestinal walls and thriving “good” intestinal bacteria required to for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients, the genetic information released through the breakdown of food has a direct effect on such functions as gene expression, disease onset and progression, mental state, and even weight gain and loss.

Dr. Rodier wrote that while the health problems brought about through TOIL are numerous, most of us would be surprised to learn that effective treatment for their symptoms and illnesses can be accomplished nutritionally with a simple change in diet.

“When we begin to substitute healthy foods and nutrients for the processed foods we are accustomed to eating, our cells begin to detoxify almost immediately,” he said.

“The problem is that many of us have become addicted to junk food and processed foods – and continual advertisements for it on radio, TV, magazines, and newspapers only reinforce our addiction.”

In “Switching Off Chronic Disease,” Dr. Rodier outlines a dietary protocol for healing which he calls “The Cellular Detox Diet” — an eight week program which starts by eliminating processed foods, sugary juices and soft drinks and replacing them with lean proteins, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Fruits, legumes, and whole grains are gradually added as the diet progresses.

The diet also includes a short list of nutritional supplements starting with an all-in-one nutrient powder for cellular support called Constant Health Daily, from Cell Nutritionals.

“I don’t ask my patients to convert from being fast food aficionados to vegetarians overnight, but they can do a few simple things to gradually start the detox process, like eating a few more vegetables and a little less processed food each week,” Dr. Rodier said.

“Good health takes a commitment. When a patient tells me they’ve gone through their pantry and tossed out their soda and diet soda, then I know they’re ready to break their addiction to processed foods, detox at the cellular level, and switch off their susceptibility to chronic disease.”
