Bones. They are our internal structure. They are what keep us standing upright, they protect our organs, and hold calcium among other things. We exersice to keep our bones strong and healthy.
Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. It leads to an increased risk of bone fractures typically in the wrist, hip, and spine.
According to the Center for Disease Control, by the age of 20, the average woman has acquired most of her skeletal mass. A large decline in bone mass occurs in older adults, which increases the risk of osteoporosis. For women, this occurs around the time of menopause.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has just recently expanded its osteoperosis screening recommendation to include younger women who have risk factors for the disease. The guidelines have expanded routine osteoperosis screening to include all women 65 and older as well as younger women at increased risk of bone fractures.
Women under the age of 65 who may be at risk could include those who weigh under 125 pounds, those who smoke, drink, or have parents with a history of bone fractures.
So if you find that you or someone you know are at risk for osteoperosis, visit the Valencia Health and Wellness Fair. During this fair there will be a registered nurse on hand to provide free osteoperosis screenings to men and women.
“It’s basically to inform the community of the importance of information,” said Renee Schantz of Valencia Pharmacy.”We are also offering screening and information related to breast health, cardiac disease, and diabetes.”
The event is free and offers education in many areas of women’s health. In addition to the FREE Osteoporosis screening, breast health, diabetes, and cardiovascular information there will be representatives from Curves Gym, Jobst compression stockings, and Nova medical equipment. there will also be some great raffles and healthy snacks.
