A parent’s main concern is the health and safety of their children. However, there is one major thing that some parents and pediatricians might be leaving out, routine dental checkups for their children. Routine dental checkups are so vital to a child’s health and overall well being.
It’s important for children to have regular dental check-ups to keep teeth cavity free and to remove debris that can build up. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a dental check-up at least twice a year for most children. Although, some children may need more frequent visits because of increased risk of tooth decay unusual growth patterns, or poor oral hygiene.

Experts suggest that every child should have their first dental visit by their third birthday. Tooth decay should not be the only reason to visit the dentist, your pediatric dentist provides an ongoing assessment of changes in your child’s oral health. Surprisingly, less than 17% of pediatricians suggest a child have their first dental visit by their first birthday. By having regular checkups, the pediatric dentist will identify orthodontic problems and can suggest treatments to help guide the teeth as they grow in.
As a parent there are many things that you can do to aid in your child’s overall oral health in between check-ups. When tooth paste is used on a young child use a pea sized amount on a soft bristled tooth brush and make sure the child does not attempt to swallow the toothpaste. By the ages of three to four, you can begin to help your child floss regularly and by the ages of eight to ten years old, they should be able to floss on their own. It may be beneficial to invest in toothpaste that contains fluoride, as fluoride defends the enamel on teeth.
In addition to teaching your children the importance of regular brushing and flossing, routine visits to the dentist and a healthy diet, it is crucial that you set a good example by also practicing good dental hygiene.
