“Rattlesnakes out here are highly venomous and we want to make the community aware of treatment and prevention,” said William Bozlee, program manager for Henry Mayo’s community education.

The class is set to host an expert hiker who has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. She will focus on hiking safety as well as give tips on what equipment is needed when going on a hike.

A Henry Mayo ER doctor, who has over 40 years of experience with snake bites, is also scheduled to be at the event along with a naturalist from Placerita Canyon Nature Center who will present a live rattlesnake for identification purposes.

Currently, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital treats up to 12 venomous snake bites a year in the emergency room, according to Bozlee.

“People have been told many myths when it comes to snake bites,” added Bozlee. “They’re told to suck the venom out and that’s false. It could do more damage.”

Other survival myths about snake bites include making a cut and squeezing out the venom, as well as wearing a tourniquet, which could keep the venom in one place instead of letting it spread and eventually diluting, according to Bozlee.

The free event will be held on Sept. 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Education Center at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health located at 24525 Town Center Drive in Valencia.
