In an effort to prepare patients scheduled to have spine surgery, spine education classes are offered at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

The classes are required by the hospital’s neurosurgeons and spine surgeons, and are designed to help patients get ready for their surgery and with recovery after they are discharged.
Taught by a joint and spine clinical nurse navigator, spine education classes cover important topics like surgery details; rehab; precautions to take after surgery; how to manage pain; wound care; and prevention of surgical infections.
Patients will be guided through their surgical “journey” from day one through six months after their surgery, with the navigator addressing mobility and recovery issues in an effort to put patients at ease.

Nurse navigators will respond to all patient questions — whether basic or complex — during an interactive class format featuring an informal Q&A session and implant model demonstrations that attendees can see and touch.
Patients who participate in the class will take home a custom guidebook designed to reinforce class lessons and a wash kit required before their surgery, as well as a spine surgery clinical pathway to help them better navigate their care.
The Joint Commission has awarded Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital’s program with four Gold Seals for demonstrating excellence in hip, knee, shoulder and spine surgeries.
