Not only is Donna Ferguson a registered nurse, but for the past 12 years she has been the director of Outpatient Services at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

She sat down with KHTS to explain how the outpatient services work at Henry Mayo and introduced two new services that residents may not be aware of.

“I want the community to know the jewels that we have there at Henry Mayo Hospital,” said Ferguson.

“Outpatient” refers to those patients that do not need to be hospitalized, or stay overnight at the hospital. These patients are able to come to the hospital during the day to receive services and then go home.

The Infusion Center is one of the new centers at Henry Mayo. It is a department for patients that need any kind of medications, blood transfusions, or just fluids that are delivered through an IV. These patients can come in and go home that same day.

“It’s a great place where patients that don’t need to stay in the hospital, but they need medications, they need fluids, they need blood, they need maybe chemotherapy,” said Ferguson. “And so they can be discharged from the hospital, go home where they are more comfortable and they just come into the infusion center, at prescribed times, and get their medication, their blood infused and go home, so that they’re comfortable.”

The Outpatient Wound Care Center has been at the hospital for 12 years now and offers services to patients that treat different kinds of wounds, chronic and non-healing wounds.

The department has specialized doctors who provide treatments that include: skin substitutes, graphs, different kinds of dressing, and some casting.

The new Hyperbaric Wound Care Center is for patients that have a possibility of losing a limb. Hyperbaric, also known as “limb salvage,” is targeted to prevent amputation.

“Hyperbarics is delivering 100 percent oxygen, under pressure, in a single-person chamber. That’s what we have at Henry Mayo. Then that pressurized oxygen is kind of forced to travel through your lungs,” said Ferguson, “down into all of the blood vessels. Sometimes, diabetics especially, those vessels have never seen oxygen, they’re very poorly oxygenated. So this hyperbaric pressurizes and forces the oxygen for each treatment into those areas that need oxygen to heal.”

There are two hyperbaric chambers at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. The chamber is a long, clear tube that a patient rolls into, and is all clear plastic. Ferguson explained that it is very comfortable and the hospital has televisions, DVDs and music hooked up for patients to listen to.

Patients who use this treatment typically come in five days a week, for two hours at a time, for a month to six weeks.

There is no where else in the Santa Clarita Valley that offers hyperbaric treatment, and healing outcomes are increased an average of 75-80 percent.
