Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital staff are celebrating American Heart Month in February by offering a series of special events for the community all month long.

On Friday, hospital staff held “Go Red Day,” where they asked everyone to wear red as a symbol of the importance of heart health.

“It’s so everyone can know how important it is to be heart healthy,” said Dorinda Perez, a nurse at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “(It’s) a symbol that they’re understanding how important it is to be heart healthy this month, to exercise and eat right, keep those blood pressure numbers down and just recognize what the symptoms are.”

Then on Monday, a free Heart Attack Prevention and Post Heart Attack Care Class was held at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health, teaching participants about everything from symptoms of a heart attack to cholesterol to cardiac rehabilitation.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is in its fifth year, with a special anniversary dinner planned for patients to celebrate their journey back to wellness, according to Perez.

Coming up Feb. 9 is a free Heart Health Fair at the Newhall Community Center, where attendees can receive a number of free screenings from 7:30-10:30 a.m., including blood pressure monitoring, a cholesterol and glucose test and carotid artery screening.  

Also Feb. 9 is a Nutrition and Inflammation class set to begin at 10 a.m. at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health, which will discuss dietary causes of inflammation, correcting a diet that is out of balance and more.

Women’s Health Week will take place at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital from Feb. 19 through Feb. 24, with a variety of events ranging from “Heart to Heart Talk Tuesday” and “The More You Know.”

Then the series of events in honor of American Heart Month concludes Feb. 26 with a class called “Mindful Eating, Healthy Food, Happy Heart” at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health.

Rather than try to make a number of major changes all at once, Perez recommends making small changes over time to improve overall health.

“It’s very difficult to make all these changes all at one time and people kind of fall off track when they do that,” she explained. “We’re asking them (to) take one or two of your risk factors (and) make some small changes. It’s all about moderation and balance every day.”
