“Breastfeeding is the foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers,” according to the press release from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “Not only is breastfeeding a positive and rewarding experience for mothers, studies also show that breast milk is the ideal nutrition for a growing baby.”

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is a “Baby-Friendly” facility, meeting the standard for mother and baby care related to breastfeeding, skin-to-skin interaction, rooming-in, couplet-care and bedside lactation consultations.

At-risk premature newborns in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) statewide could mostly benefit from human breast milk due to its immunologic components, which offers protections from any possible life-threatening infections.

The Santa Clarita hospital’s goal is to supply breast milk to babies in the NICU in case of mothers being unable to supply the amount of milk needed to support their infants.

Since Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital recently became a designated breast milk drop-off location, in partnership with the San Jose Milk Bank, they will help screen and pasteurize donations before shipping them to different NICU locations all across California.

“We are thrilled to be a designated milk depot, offering local moms the opportunity to donate their extra milk to babies in need,” said Mary Beth Sweet, lactation program coordinator at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “We are so grateful to our donors who are providing human milk to help nourish and support the tiniest NICU babies across our state. It really does take a village.”

Anyone interested in donating breast milk must first complete a screening process, including a brief phone interview, paperwork and free lab testing.
