The American Cancer Society reports that most lung cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, so Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials launched screening services in March 2016 in an effort to catch lung cancer early.
“Our team will determine if the patient has cancer and at what stage of cancer they’re in,” said Mike Collins, director of interventional pulmonology at Henry Mayo, in a previous interview. “We will then provide patients with treatment options based on best practices.”
Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery and photodynamic therapy, according to Collins.

In addition, patients will receive education and support services, as well as follow-up care by a multidisciplinary team.
To be eligible for screening under Medicare-approved criteria, patients must be between the ages of 55 and 74; have a 30-pack-per-year history of smoking; and are either currently smoking or have quit smoking for less than 15 years.
Those who need help to either quit smoking or stop using nicotine products can sign up for the hospital’s individualized tobacco cessation program.
Participants meet privately with a trained tobacco cessation counselor once a week for 30-45 minutes for an initial assessment and treatment.
