How To Prevent Back Problems

By Dr. Carolyn A. Griffin, D.C.

In addition to your Chiropractor’s regular care, there are plenty of things you can do yourself to prevent back pain –a problem that affects 90% of us at some time.

Lift properly –when lifting, spread your feet to shoulder width, use your legs and bend your knees (not your back).  Once lifted, “hug” your load, keeping it close to the body.

Exercise regularly –regular exercise helps to reduce excess weight, strengthen your muscles, and increase your flexibility.  Stretching your neck, shoulders and back, helps to reduce tension.

Sit properly –if you have to sit for extended periods of time (such as driving long distances) make sure your lower back is supported, and take a stretch break every hour.

Good shoes –invest in quality shoes, and use the right footwear for each activity.  Get professional advice on whether orthotics are warranted.  Women should avoid high heels as much as possible.

Eat Well –a poor diet can make you sluggish, resulting in a lack of exercise and poor posture.  A lack of fiber usually results in constipation, which can aggravate back pain.

Emotional Wellness –feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, anger and fear result in stress, leading to muscle tension.  Learn how to relax and keep control of your life.

TIP: Pregnancy places special demands on the spine, as many physical and chemical changes take place in the woman’s body.  Chiropractic care can help throughout.
