After even just a few minutes of exposure, the body will start to burn more calories, forcing the blood up to the surface of the skin. This in turn flushes toxins from the body, may relieve joint pain and shrinks the pores.

“The chamber will be cooled to negative 240 degrees Fahrenheit, which sounds cold but it’s not as bad as you would imagine,” said Matt Browning, owner of Mend Cryotherapy. “The technician talks to you the whole time and it’s over in three minutes and you leave feeling much better.”

There are many benefits to whole body cryotherapy, most of which are noticeable after the first treatment; however multiple treatments are recommended in order to form lasting changes in the body.

“Depending on what the situation is regarding the severity of the injury, and also (because) everybody is different, it could be every day or once every two weeks, it really varies,” explained Browning. “People also come in just for soreness after a workout and that is as needed — if you are sore, come in and you’ll be better.”

Some of the benefits are cosmetic, such as the reduction of skin blemishes, cellulite and signs of aging such as wrinkles, but there are also medical benefits, such as increased recovery time, joint pain relief, flushing of toxins from the body and improved energy and sleep.

“It is probably the quickest, most effective way to alleviate pain and inflammation in the body. It also provokes an endorphin rush which will make you feel pretty good,” said Browning. “A lot of patients have been able to avoid having surgeries they previously thought they couldn’t avoid.”
