“Something I always encourage (with) family caregivers is that you’re not on an island,” McNamara says. “There are people who are (experiencing) the exact same (journey).”

The SCV Senior Center is holding a free event, “Knowledge is Power, Aging with Dignity,” to empower those who are caregivers for their loved ones and to meet others while listening to Dr. Jill Brink, a specialist in geriatric and gerontology, lecture.

“If you or someone you know is helping with an aging loved one,” McNamara says. “I would strongly suggest to come and (meet people) … and listen to what Dr. Jill has to say.”

“Knowledge is Power, Aging with Dignity” will be held, Thursday, May 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided.

McNamara also encouraged the community to participate in the annual “Donate a Bear Drive” held by Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

“Not only do they give bears to some seniors that are admitted,” McNamara said, “but they give a teddy bear to every single child that’s admitted to Henry Mayo.”

The hospital’s Bear Collection Day held in association with the drive is set for Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Camelot Moving and Storage, located at 28040 Industry Drive in Valencia.

McNamara is the owner of Comfort Keepers Home Care in Santa Clarita, advising caregivers how to maintain quality life and helping seniors age in their homes.

“We’re not nurses; if you need a helping hand with meals or around the house or personal care, or ambulatory assistance,” McNamara says, “whatever (we can do) to make you be able to stay in your home safely, that’s what our caregivers can do.”
