A Santa Clarita grief counseling expert is opening up a discussion about the prevalence of unresolved grief, and how it often stems from one of the 43 known losses that can cause a grieving experience — not just from death or divorce.

“I think people get thrown off because they hear the word ‘grief’ and they think it only goes with death,” said Sharon Brubaker, a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. “We know for a fact that unresolved grief is everywhere. Everyone in our lives, at some point in our lives, will experience a grieving experience.”

Brubaker described a grieving experience as something that breaks our hearts — that makes us feel “like a knife has been inserted in our heart” — thats needs to be talked about and dealt with.

While death and divorce are the most commonly talked about, Brubaker noted that other grieving experiences can include retirement, moving, pet loss, financial change, loss of health, legal problems, becoming an empty nester, the end of an addiction, starting school and more.

These types of life experiences can create what Brubaker called “underlying losses” that result in grief, including loss of trust, loss of safety, loss of control of our body, loss of faith, loss of fertility, etc.

“As a society, we’re not trained to talk about grief,” said Erica Honore, also a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. “But the one thing we’re familiar with is death when you relate it to grief… I don’t think people factor that there are other causes out there that can contribute to your heart being broken.”

Both Brubaker and Honore pointed out their belief that grief is not only cumulative, it is cumulatively negative, meaning that if unresolved grief isn’t addressed, it will likely continue to build over time, causing negative impacts on your emotional wellbeing and your life.

However, by making the decision to deal with unresolved grief and finding a safe place to talk about what’s going on in your broken heart, true healing can take place, according to Honore.

“If they did have an outlet and they did have a place where they could take that knife out of their heart and find words to actually convey the amount of pain they were in, it might really make a difference,” Honore said.
