“Grief is not just about death, and I think most people are shocked to hear that,” said Sharon Brubaker, a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. “Grief is a normal, natural reaction to a loss of any kind.”

Even if a married couple is fighting, they are typically still attached to their spouse and have a daily routine with that person. However, once a marital separation takes place, everything changes, according to Sandi Atmore, Brubaker’s mentor and fellow Certified Grief Recovery Specialist.

“I am now living separately from them, and my routine is different,” Atmore explained, putting herself in the shoes of newly separated person. “How do I explain this to co-workers, how do I explain this to friends? How do I feel when I’m at the movies by myself, or when I’m at the movies with another married couple? And so already that loss has produced a number of grieving experiences.”

Another prominent grieving experience that often stems from a marital separation is the fear that a divorce is coming, Brubaker added.

By starting what Brubaker called “grief work” at the time of the separation, it can not only help with the losses experienced as a result of that separation, but can also give clarity on what to do next.

“Doing your grief work helps you make the decision that’s right for you and right for your heart,” Brubaker said.

While some people may feel that they should wait until they’re in a better state of mind to begin their grief work, Atmore stressed that it’s important to start as soon as possible.

“I always tell people, this work will help you in getting to that different place,” she said. “If you wait, it’s only going to get worse, whereas if you work through this, not only will that help you to have clarity in the present about what to do moving forward … it will also give you tools to deal with what’s coming down the road.”
