Santa Clarita orthodontist Dr. Megan LeCornu of Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics is sharing how the world of retainers and sports mouth guards has changed dramatically in recent years.

While many adults remember retainers as being pink with obvious metal bars, LeCornu noted that other options are now available.

“Retainers have changed so much,” LeCornu said. “Nowadays we recommend different types of retainers depending on the individual. Everything is very customized.”

While some patients may still need a metal retainer, others may be able to use a thin, clear retainer with no metal bars, which can also help protect teeth against grinding at night.

In addition, springs can be added to retainers to create slight movement in teeth in the case of a “relapse,” according to LeCornu.
