Dr. Pete Weber of Gilbertson and LeCornu Orthodontics noted that there are a few unique benefits to both traditional string floss and a string floss pick, but regardless of which one you choose, the important thing is that you’re flossing every day.

“With the long piece, you can actually move your fingers along the piece of floss as you go, so you always have a fresh piece for every contact area,” he said. “With the pick, if that provides access for somebody to where they can do a better job with it, then I say go for it, because the most important thing at the end of the day is you’re getting that stuff out from between your teeth.”

When it comes to organic toothpaste versus the more traditional brands, Weber advised making sure the toothpaste you use always contains fluoride.

“Fluoride is what the toothpaste is bringing to your teeth that’s helping to protect your teeth,” he said. “There is tons and tons and tons of data out there about how that’s safe, how it’s protective of your teeth, why it’s okay to use, etc.”

While it can be overwhelming standing in the toothpaste aisle looking at all the different varieties, Weber noted that at the end of the day, as long as it contains fluoride, there probably isn’t much of a difference between the different brands.

“Some of the brands that might be advertising as organic might be missing that key ingredient, and really the most important thing toothpaste is doing for your teeth is bringing fluoride,” Weber said. “You can kind of pick your brand, as long as it has that in there.”

Lastly, Weber recommends brushing teeth three times a day, even if it needs to be quick.

“If you can do it after every meal, even something quick,” he said, noting this is even more important for those with orthodontic appliances in their mouth. “Kids don’t get a lot of time at school at lunch, but we say if you can get in there real quick and just get the food cleaned out of there, it really helps a lot.”
